Financial regulations in China are often vague, incomplete or simply not accessible. Local banking and insurance services lack the sophistication needed in a modern business. The unique China “fapiao” system, the need to chop certain documents, rigorous controls of outbound payments, etc., are unfamiliar to a western financial manager. The rise of digital payments providers WeChat and AliPay seems promising, but these are very difficult to integrate into a company’s finance operations. Finally, all documentation vis-à-vis the tax bureau, the foreign exchange watchdog SAFE or any other government office must be in Chinese only. In a word, you need a locally versed and trusted finance manager that will work towards international business standards.
